Interview with Rodrigo Albagli | What challenges does the legal industry face in 2023?

Feb 6, 2023

It will be necessary to continue incorporating technologies in the management of firms to improve levels of efficiency, transparency and access to information” Rodrigo added.

On the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day of the Lawyer (February 3rd) our managing partner, Rodrigo Albagli, shared his impressions with Lemontech about the main challenges that the legal industry will face in 2023.

It is important to highlight that the use of technological tools is becoming more and more relevant, leading to an unprecedented competition in the market.

One of the points that Rodrigo highlights is how this year the competition will be increasing due to the “strong pressure with the reduction of fees” and the “exponential growth of legal management and in-house teams“.

From an internal point of view of law firms, it will be necessary every day to advance in the professionalization of organizations, both at the level of recruitment, development and retention of talent, as well as in the active management of clients and at the level of the support areas of the firms (…) In the same way, in-house legal teams are increasingly more professional and better understand the business and the industry in which they work, which forces external lawyers to understand much more of the business and make the traditional work and delivery structures more flexible” he said.

On the other hand, process automation and artificial intelligence are some of the technologies that are transforming the legal industry.

Lawyers will have to understand that the power lies with the client and therefore it is essential to complement technical capabilities with personal, commercial and technological skills (…) We have heard that technology will at some point displace lawyers, that legal work will be done by a robot, but I do not agree with this position” he added.

Finally, Rodrigo reflected “I am convinced that if we actively participate in this digital revolution, it will be the opposite, technology will be at the service of law and not law at the service of technology“.
