This regulation seeks to reduce the use of stolen devices and improve the security of users.
On February 13, Law No. 21.729 was published in the Official Gazette, which introduces key changes to the General Telecommunications Law regarding personal information.
What issues does it incorporate?
- Compulsory registration of users: Telephone and data companies will have to keep an updated registry of their clients, including name, address, identity card/passport and identification of mobile devices (IMEI, MSISDN and IMSI). This data will be stored for 5 years, with strict security and data care protocols, in compliance with the Privacy Protection Law.
- Blocking of stolen devices: Concessionaires will be required to finance an effective system to block stolen, stolen or lost phones, regulated by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications.
- Penalties for tampering with IMEI: Modifying or altering the IMEI of a mobile device (unique identification code of a cell phone) will be a crime, with prison sentences (minimum imprisonment) and fines between 11 and 15 UTM.
This regulation seeks to reduce the use of stolen devices and improve user security. Companies now have a key role in the implementation of these measures, always taking care of the personal information of their customers and users.
